Phil was great. We were trying to accomplish a certain set of goals in renovating our apartment (in a Manhattan co-op) while not expanding the project significantly, and Phil produced exactly the results we were hoping for within the timeframe we were trying to meet. Perhaps most impressively, Phil was always accessible, and he never, ever got riled up -- when we were worried about something, Phil helped calm us down both by his demeanor and by his results. Phil's crew was also pleasant, trustworthy, and professional. We had heard many horror stories about GCs, but our experience with Phil and his crew was the opposite. I would highly recommend them. Phil is incredibly professional, engaged, responsive, organized and clear in his communication. The quality of the work is very strong. Phil followed the Architectural drawings we provided and always asked questions when he was not clear on something. Phil was excellent at communicating with me, the Architect, and with the client and I felt like we were both aligned in our goal of completing the project on time and on budget and in delivering a high quality project to the client. As an Architect and also as someone who has renovated my own homes, I know how important it is to pick the right contractor and Phil is one of the best I have worked with. It took my fiance and I 1-2 months of balancing bids both from Sweeten and outside of Sweeten to decide to move forward with Phil. There are three reasons why you should hire Phil: 1.) He has a design eye. This is critical, especially if you are working full-time. I trusted Phil to make design decisions that cropped up. Even though I am trained as an architect, I did not have the time to design/spec/draw the placement and detail of every single item. I trusted Phil and his team to make sound judgement calls, especially when I was not around (I work 9AM-9PM, as do many New Yorkers!) When there was a specific detail we had to work out, he and his team were able to interpret narratives and hand sketches and recommend solutions. In short, you can trust him on design/execution. 2.) He is communicative. Since my fiance and I both work very long hours, it was imperative we selected someone who was a good texter/emailer so that we could work asynchronously. 3.) He won't lose his cool/patience. Two reasons why this was important to me: (1) any major life project is stressful, and (2) I work on live construction sites and things can get heated, so I didn't want to come home and continue to work in a high-stress environment. Phil speaks calmly and approaches conflicts in a professional way. This is super important; don't underestimate this!! When your whole apartment is a work in process, you need someone who is level-headed, calm, and professional!

Phil has a really great design sense - he's more than just a contractor who manages and executes. He was really able to provide valuable input about how things would look, what would make a big difference, and watch outs. This was extremely helpful for us, as we are first time renovators - we had a lot of ideas and thoughts, but he was able to really help us narrow down and get us to an ideal output. I also liked that he brought us along with the process, but only as we needed/wanted to be. He kept us up-to-date with everything, and made sure he got our input on key points, but was also able to manage independently on things we didn't need to be involved with. I know a few people who have done renovations, and it's been a 6 month nightmare that's taken over their lives. Looking back on our experience, it's amazing how much got done without any headaches or hiccups, or really any disruption to our lives. That being said, still being involved throughout the process (as needed, and with things we want to be involved with) gives us a sense of ownership - this house is our baby, and we did it!
